What is a Virtual Private Server?
A Virtual Private Server is the next step up from shared web hosting, offering the power and configurability of a dedicated server, but without any hardware issues to worry about. We have powerful physical servers partitioned into isolated virtual servers - each of which looks and behaves like a real networked server system.
The number one advantage for most clients is the power of root access: Maybe you'd like to run PostgreSQL, or install some complex software packages. You can run any services you like - your own mailserver, FTP servers with unlimited users - anything you need. There's no limit to the number of websites you can run.
Virtuozzo technology scales up well - hundreds of servers can be efficiently managed from a single GUI console. A single virtual private server could be scaled up from taking a little fraction of available resources up to all resources available dynamically - you do not even have to restart the virtual private server.
Most applications can be installed within a Virtual Private Server without any modifications. Our customers are using Oracle, DB/2, Weblogic, Websphere and other commerical applications quite succesfully. Applications and services do not have to be aware of Virtuozzo, but direct access to hardware is not available.
We directly offer Plesk licenses and can install that for you. It's best to order this when you first setup your VPS as it replaces many services such as PHP, mail server software and so on. If you want to install other control panel software you are welcome to do so.
If the above sounds good to you, you should also bear in mind that a VPS also needs to be self-administered. As you are in full control of the software, you also need to look after installing applications, maintaining security, handling software updates, etc. If you are not experienced with administering a server, this may not be for you. Our systems administrators can offer support if you get into difficulties, but this is chargeable.
